PH Lab Report: September 2026

AI assistants, community influence and an uneven September sales picture. Our take on the developments worth turning into practical decisions.

September’s developments point towards a common challenge: customers have more ways to discover a business, while marketing teams have more tools to influence that journey.

The opportunity is to make the work more useful. This month’s Lab Report connects AI in digital marketing, community understanding and the commercial quality of growth.

Meta Introduces Muse for Small Business

Meta announced Muse for Small Business on 29 September. It connects business tools and accounts to help with tasks including analysis and campaign preparation. Meta says publishing, sending and spending require approval. The announcement follows Muse’s initial availability in the US and Canada. Read Meta’s announcement.

Our Take: Check regional access before planning around a tool. Where it is available, start with a defined question and a result someone can verify.

An assistant could help organise observations or prepare a first draft. Your team still needs to check the figures, the customer promise and the decision behind the recommendation. Faster preparation is useful when it gives people more time for judgement.

YouTube Looks Beyond Awareness

YouTube’s September Culture & Trends research explores how visibility, comprehension and participation contribute to cultural influence. Its findings highlight the role of online communities in helping ideas reach wider audiences. Read YouTube’s research.

Our Take: A digital content strategy needs to consider whether people understand what they have seen. Reach alone cannot answer that.

Choose a recurring customer question and explain it clearly across a short video, a demonstration and a useful page. Look at the questions people ask afterwards. Those responses can reveal where your explanation still needs work.

PH’s September Read: Annual Growth, Monthly Pressure

Across PH Digital’s retail and ecommerce portfolio, September revenue rose 18.6% year on year, while total discount value rose 63.3% and returns rose 45.6%. Compared with August, total revenue fell 6.9%.

These figures describe PH’s clients, not the entire New Zealand market. Higher sales do not establish that profitability improved, and the total can differ from the typical-client experience.

Our Take: Put marketing ROI measurement alongside margin, returns and repeat purchasing. Review the offers and product categories contributing to the result before deciding where to increase spend.

What to Take Into October

Give one improvement a clear owner: a better explanation of the offer, a controlled assistant workflow or a closer review of campaign economics.

Brand and performance marketing work best when the promise, proof and buying experience support each other. Use September’s changes to strengthen that connection before adding more activity.
